Das fragte eine Besucherin meinen Vater, der ihr antwortete: ?Naja, Sie stehen mittendrin. Aber die Nadeln sind halt dicker– Stopfnadeln eben“, denn wir befinden uns im Needles District des Canyonlands National Park. Die gro?en ?Nadeln‘ sind ein ganzes Stück von der Parkstra?e entfernt. Deshalb erkunden wir auf kurzen Trails diesen Teil des Parks. Auf dem Pothole Trail begeben wir uns auf Spurensuche, denn nach Regen soll es hier sogar z. B. Krebse und Kaulquappen geben. Der Weg führt über den glatten Fels. Der Sandstein ist an manchen Stellen weicher und so k?nnen sich durch Verwitterung Vertiefungen bilden. Nach vielen Jahren füllen sich diese mit verwittertem Gestein, es bildet sich ein wenig Boden und irgendwann wachsen sogar Pflanzen. Aber es steht auch Wasser darin – Lebensraum für so manches Tierchen, wenn auch nur für kurze Zeit.

?A visitor asked my father, who replied: „Well, you are standing in the middle of it. But the needles are thicker – they’re just darning needles„, because we are in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park. The big ’needles‘ are quite a distance from the park road. So we explore this part of the park on short trails, e.g. the Pothole Trail. We are looking for traces of life, because after rain there are even crabs and tadpoles. The trail leads over the smooth rock. The sandstone is softer in some places and thus depressions can form due to weathering. After many years these depressions fill up with weathered rock, a little soil is formed and at some point even plants grow. But there is also water in it – habitat for many animals, even if they live only for a short time.

Am Torrey Pines State Beach liegt hellerer Sand über dunklem und immer, wenn sich die Wellen zurückziehen und ein Hindernis da liegt, entstehen die unterschiedlichsten Muster. Woher kommt der hellere Sand? Von der Klippe, an deren Fu? der Strand liegt und auf der sich Wanderwege durch den Torrey Pines State Reserve ziehen. Also kommt zuerst mit auf eine kleine Wanderung und dann an den Strand. (2016)

At the Torrey Pines State Beach there is lighter sand over darker sand and always, when the waves move back and an obstacle lies there, the most different patterns are created. Where does the lighter sand come from? From the cliff, at the foot of which the beach is. On top of the cliff are hiking trails which lead through the Torrey Pines State Reserve.
