Schon die alten R?mer siedelten am Zusammenfluss von Enz, Nagold und Würm. Im 13. und 14. Jahrhundert residierte der Markgraf von Baden hier und Pforzheim erlebte seine erste Blütezeit. Dann ging es bergab und 1718 wurde eine Waisenhaus gegründet. Der Markgraf errichtete dort eine Uhrenfabrik, damit die Kinder besch?ftigt waren. Bald wurde auch Schmuck hergestellt und so wurde Pforzheim im Laufe der Jahrzehnte zum bedeutendsten deutschen Standort für die Gold- und Silberwarenherstellung. Alles fand endgültig ein j?hes Ende als am 23. Februar 1945 die Stadt von Bomben der Alliierten fast dem Erdboden gleich gemacht wurde. Heute sind daher nur wenige alte Geb?ude in der Stadt zu finden, aber die Schmuck- und Uhrenindustrie der Stadt ist heute noch führend in Deutschland.

A short walk through the Gold City
Already the ancient Romans settled at the confluence of the rivers Enz, Nagold and Würm. In the 13th and 14th centuries, the Margrave of Baden resided here and Pforzheim experienced its first heyday. Then things went downhill and in 1718 an orphanage was founded. The margrave built a watch factory there to keep the children busy. Soon jewelry was also produced and so Pforzheim became the most important German location for gold and silverware production over the decades. Everything came to an abrupt end when on February 23, 1945 the city was almost razed to the ground by Allied bombs. Today, therefore, only a few old buildings can be found in the city, but the city’s jewelry and watchmaking industry is still leading in Germany.
