Year Vanished: 1980s

Discovered: 1984

In a remarkable twist of fate, Eleonore, a friendly Nile crocodile, was discovered in the sewers near the Seine River in Paris, France, in 1984. Her presence in the urban underbelly was unexpected, capturing the attention of locals and animal enthusiasts alike.

While Eleonore had been effectively reducing the rat population in the city, it became evident that life in the sewers was not suitable for a crocodile. Concern for her well-being prompted efforts to relocate her to a more appropriate environment, away from the depths of the Seine.

Eleonore, a Nile crocodile, was once a beloved pet that grew too large for her owner to manage in the 1980s. Tragically, she was abandoned and discarded into the sewers of Paris. Fortunately, in 1984, a crew from the Vannes aquarium in Brittany came to her rescue, relocating her to a specially designed enclosure.

Her new home at the aquarium was thoughtfully crafted to resemble the Paris sewers that Eleonore had come to know and enjoy, providing her with a familiar environment. Despite the care she received, Eleonore passed away in 2021, marking the end of her remarkable journey from the depths of the Seine to a sanctuary that honored her unique story.
